The Opportunity
The Connie Johnson Breast Cancer Research Laboratory led by Associate Prof Elgene Lim performs clinically focussed laboratory research with an emphasis on hormone receptor-driven breast cancer.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for managing the breast cancer biobank. This would involve consenting patients for tissue collection, banking tissue from St Vincent’s Hospital, and performing experiments in the laboratory.
Duties will include:
- Consent and collection of patient tissue from the hospital.
- Managing the breast cancer biobank database
- Conduct research under supervision using techniques such as tissue culture, molecular cloning, FACS and flow cytometry, cell line screening, and genomic, genetic and proteomic analysis (e.g. DNA sequencing, qPCR, Western blot)
- Record experimental procedures and results
- Regularly attend meetings with the research group and wider Research Division community as required
- Be involved in lab responsibilities such as:
- Store duties, wash-up and cleaning of shared rooms;
- Stock control: monitoring and ordering consumables under supervision
- Preparation of communal reagents
- Responsible for imparting knowledge in relation to skills or experimental expertise
About You
The successful candidate will possess the following key skills and qualifications:
• Bachelors’ Degree in Science or Medicine (preferably with honours)
• Experience with molecular techniques: RNA isolation and PCR, protein isolation and western blotting, IHC
• Culture and transfection of mammalian cells, drug studies in cell lines
• Cell viability analysis
• Competent computer skills (Excel, Word & PowerPoint)
Highly desirable:
• Knowledge of and/or experience with FACS and flow cytometry
• Knowledge of and/or experience with CRISPr/Cas9
• Experience with co-immunoprecipitation of protein complexes
