The Work Health & Safety team are responsible for leading, coordinating and advising on all work health and safety matters to staff, students and visitors to maintain a safe and hazard free environment. Additionally, the Team provide advice and assistance to ensure the Institute’s ongoing compliance with relevant legislation, including the WHS Act and supporting regulations; implementation of a WHS Management System, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines.

 

You role will be:

The Bio WHS Manager is accountable for the overarching development and administration of policies, procedures and training necessary to ensure the Institute achieves a high standard of workplace safety, injury management, risk assessment and is positioned to comply with all related legislative requirements.

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Drive a positive “safety culture” within the Institute
  • Lead the WHS Team in the implementation of the WHS Management System (WHSMS) at all Garvan work sites
  • Develop the annual WHS Strategic and WHS Team plans
  • Provide strategic direction and specialist advice on the management of all work health & safety matters
  • Partner with key stakeholders to develop, implement and maintain WHS practices and policies
  • Ensure that agreed consultation arrangements are implemented and maintained at every Garvan work site
  • Investigate and review high risk incidents and ensure that corrective action is taken
  • Draft, review and approve risk assessments and safe work procedures as required
  • Plan for and facilitate WHS audits
  • Regularly measure and report on WHS performance to the Executive Team & Board
  • Lead Injury Management including effective claims management to minimise impact on insurance premiums
  • Ensure continuous improvement of WHS systems and practices for maximum effectiveness and long term sustainability

You'll be someone with:

  • Previous experience within a laboratory, science or research organisation (bio health & safety)
  • Relevant qualifications (certificate, diploma or degree) in science &/or WHS.
  • Extensive previous experience in a senior WHS role
  • Commitment to best practice in work health and safety
  • Proven experience in developing, implementing and monitoring of a WHS Management System, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Strong knowledge of current WHS legislation and demonstrated ability to keep abreast of environmental changes and updates
  • Ability to confidently work with scientific staff in documenting their procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communications
