Bioinformatician - Single Cell & Computational Genomics
Job No:
GC201972
Location:
Darlinghurst
The research program of the Single Cell and Computational Genomics lab focuses on demonstrating the genomic mechanisms by which loci contribute to complex human diseases, and working towards early stage diagnosis methods and targeted therapeutics. To do so, we apply existing computational approaches, and develop our own statistical genetics methods for analysis of large-scale next generation sequencing data. Following in silico experiments, we perform functional validation of statistical observations using molecular techniques such as high-throughput genome editing and cell phenotyping. We have a very significant focus on the use of single cell sequence data and technology, due to the phenomenal resolution it offers in being able to identify differences in the genomics processes between individual cells. The lab drives projects in a number of areas of medical genomics research, but we also believe strongly in the value of collaboration between groups with differing expertise. We are committed to reproducible research practices, and open data policies.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Bioinformatician to work with members of the Single Cell and Computational Biology to support computational research activities across the following areas:
- Population genetics meets single cell sequencing
- Resolving the genetic mechanisms of complex human disease using stem cells
- Clinical translation of single cell sequencing for diagnosis and precision medicine
The role will involve curation, management, and analysis of high-throughput genomic data and patient medical records. In addition to supporting the research activities of other group members, opportunities will be made available to pursue and publish leading research.
Reporting to the Lab Head, Associate Professor Joseph Powell, the key responsibilities include the following:
- Research including analysis of data generated within the Single Cell and Computational Genomics lab, by collaborators or in the public domain, method development and testing and writing computer code data analysis
- Supporting role in manuscript preparation
- Presenting results in lab meetings and conferences
- Record-keeping and administrative aspects that underlie scientific research in discussion with lab heads, development of timelines
- Collaborating with other group members, and as part of national and international consortia
- Attending, discussing and reviewing current and future techniques within Garvan’s Bioinformatics (BUG) meetings.
- Making contributions in research that creatively address questions of science in his/her project.
- Supporting several research projects in an efficient and timely manner and have the outcomes of these projects published under joint authorship in leading scientific journals.
- Achieving work priorities for the Research Themes and participate with other researchers in reviewing progress against overall goals and collaborative effectiveness.
- Interacting productively (where appropriate) within and across themes, lead constructive discussion at the Garvan's seminar program and be seen as a person whom more junior staff can approach for technical advice.
The position will be offered full time for 2 years (with possible extension).
About You
You will have the following key skills and experiences:
- Degree in a relevant field e.g. computer science, genetics, physics, statistics, epidemiology, bioinformatics or other relevant areas, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Excellent computational background, especially in the management of large data sets in HPC environment
- High proficiency in programming and scripting languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python)
- Advanced user of the R programming language and R-based statistical packages and tools, such as those available from the Bioconductor project for high throughput genomic data analysis
- Good knowledge of statistics and presentation of molecular/clinical data
- Demonstrated experience using version control for code development and curation
- Experience in the analysis and interpretation of large genomic data sets (WGS, RNA-Seq, scRNA-Seq)
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and strong in team work and collaborative research
- Excellent project management and organisation skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
