The opportunity:

This opportunity is for a trained professional in Science or Health Education and Community Engagement who will be responsible for engaging communities and secondary school teachers with the science and issues surrounding clinical genomics. This is a part-time role based on 3 days per week.

 

Key responsibilities of this position will be:

  • Develop, package and deliver innovative genomics-focused teacher education programs and resources, in collaboration with stakeholders and partners
  • Develop, package and deliver innovative clinical genomics-focused engagement programs and resources for communities
  • Consult with stakeholders and members of key audiences – including a newly-established community advisory group – on aspects of the organisation’s activities
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in education, both externally and internally

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in BSc or BA/Honours/Masters in a related discipline, and experience in science education.
  • Experience in developing educational resources and programs in contemporary science or medicine for community and/or formal adult education audiences
  • Demonstrated skills in translating scientific research – and associated social, cultural and legal issues – into accessible formats for different audiences
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, both verbal and written
  • Possess excellent team working, time management and organisational skills
  • Capacity to work rapidly and accurately under pressure, and to undertake educational programs that may run outside regular working hours

 

The Institute

The Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG) was established by the Garvan Institute in 2012 to advance the use of genomic information in patient care. Clinical genomics is a rapidly evolving field focused on the use of genomic sequencing information in patient diagnosis and treatment. KCCG employs world-leading DNA analysis technology – including the Illumina HiSeq X-Ten, which can sequence more than 15,000 whole human genome sequences per year. KCCG currently employs staff from diverse disciplines – from software engineering and big data analytics to education and cancer genomics – to realise the clinical value of the genome.
