The Transcriptomic Research group (part of the Genomics and Epigenetics Division) at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research investigates the complexity of human gene expression and its contribution towards disease. We have notably developed a cutting-edge technique for targeted DNA and RNA sequencing that enables high-resolution analysis of human genome regions of interest.

 

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Transcriptomic Research Assistant to work as part of a team to achieve designated objectives. The role of the Research Assistant will be varied and will require the successful applicant to work on whole genome sequencing projects, optimisation of protocols, production, contributing for high end publications and involved in international collaborations.

 Reporting to the Laboratory Head – Transcriptomic Research, the key responsibilities include:

  • Optimise and assist in the production of synthetic sequencing standards for global distribution.
  • Work closely with molecular biologists, bioinformatics and software engineers to research new designs and analyse the data.
  • Originate new ideas for production optimization and work with interdisciplinary teams in exploring those ideas via experimentation.
  • Operate liquid handling robots and other automated systems.
  • Production and synthetics of nucleic acids.
  • Production of next-generation sequencing libraries to use in platforms such as Illumina, Nanopore, a plus.
  • Perform analysis of experimental results. Work using best laboratory practices, maintaining well-organized and concise records of worked performed and results.
  • Administer research collaborations. This includes organisation of national and international shipments.

 The role will be offered for full time for 17 months in the first instance.

 

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key skills and attributes:

  • Science graduate plus honours with minimum 4 years of laboratory experience in molecular biology.  
  • Experience in molecular biology, genomics and next-generation sequencing
  • Critical thinking skills required for interpretations of results and troubleshooting
  • Strong commitment to quality
  • Excellent communication skills for written reporting and presentation
  • Capacity to work co-operatively with other team members
  • Demonstrate good organisational and administrative skills
  • Be well organised and a good time manager
  • Excellent communication with external collaborators
