Your role in our future

Associate Professor Alex Swarbrick heads a multidisciplinary laboratory with the mission to develop new treatment strategies for breast and prostate cancer. His lab studies human disease and patient-derived xenografts using advanced molecular and cellular biology, immunology & computational methods. 

With his close clinical collaborators, he runs a fresh tissue collection program, building unique cohorts of tissue sampled throughout disease progression. These tissues undergo analysis using methods including flow cytometry and single cell sequencing. In vitro and animal models are then used to test novel mechanistic hypotheses, treatments & biomarkers. The most promising biomarkers or treatment strategies undergo rigorous preclinical testing followed by early phase clinical trials.

Dr Swarbrick is seeking a Research Officer who will be responsible, under direction, for generating new biological insights into the stromal and immune tumour microenvironment (TME) of breast and prostate cancer. The research officer will perform experimental work to assess the implications of novel TME biology on tumour progression and immunology.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Design and manage own experiments and report and discuss findings back to supervisor
  • Regularly attend extra seminar meetings and conferences
  • Contribute towards research projects through to authorship of abstracts and publications in journals specific to field
  • Develop research-related material for the benefit of collaborators, with appropriate guidance from senior staff, and assist in the design and/or the operation of specialised laboratory and technical equipment or the conduct of advanced research procedures
  • Proactively and efficiently manage the administrative functions associated with lab management
  • Organise resource and equipment issues
  • All staff are required to comply with Garvan’s Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy and work in accordance with the WHS management system at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

About you: 

You will have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in relevant field such as cancer cell biology or immunology.
  • Molecular biology skills, e.g. PCR, cloning, cell transfection, CRISPR
  • Experience with cell biology, reporter assays, imagining, flow cytometry and other immunoassays (ELISA)
  • Mouse model experience
  • Imaging (confocal; light microscopy and working knowledge of related software)
  • Ability to rapidly learn new techniques
  • Results-oriented; adaptable approach to answering scientific questions
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritise tasks
  • Display innovative and proactive abilities
  • Comfortable with moderate decision making
  • Possess strong computing skills 
  • Previous experience working with genomics or related techniques
  • An interest or ability in computer coding in environments such as R
  • Expertise/knowledge in the field of cancer immunology or the tumour microenvironment
