The BioVis Centre develops novel solutions to cutting-edge data challenges, with the goal of accelerating discovery in biomedical research. The Centre collaborates with strategic initiatives and institutions in biomedical research, both in Australia and internationally, with a particular focus on diseases of relevance to Australian society. The BioVis Centre team focuses on developing methods and tools that help life scientists exploit large datasets to gain insight into underlying biological and biomedical processes.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a 3D Visualization Software Engineer to develop a versatile platform of animations conveying dynamic protein structural states relating to children’s cancer, with the aim of improving accessibility of 3D model data and new insights.
Reporting to Prof Sean O’Donoghue, Laboratory Head – BioVis Centre, the key responsibilities include:
- Extending and improving the Centre’s existing ‘Aquaria’ molecular visualisation system, adding new capabilities, and improving the overall performance.
- User interface development, computer graphics, and performance optimisation.
- Exercising of standard software engineering tasks (code management and testing) to ensure that the extended system has a suitable standard of quality, stability, and maintainability.
- Applying the new framework to test key aspects of the visualisation, with the aim of improving the ability of users to derive new insights from their data.
- Actively engaging with scientists at Garvan, with our CSIRO partners, and elsewhere.
The role will be offered for full time for 18 months in the first instance.
About You
The successful candidate will possess the following key skills and attributes:
- Tertiary qualifications in the life sciences or a related area and
- Experience in interactive graphics, data analysis, and scientific web programming, with proficiency in languages, especially JavaScript etc.
- Enthusiasm for and ability to carry out detailed research on biomedical topics, understand complex scientific content and effectively communicate information visually - as well as verbally - to a broad audience
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to work independently is essential
