Research Officer/Senior Research Officer - Personalised Cancer Therapeutics
The Cancer Research Division is an integrated series of strongly interactive research groups undertaking research aimed at increasing the knowledge base in the development, progression, treatment and prevention of human cancers. The Division provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary and interactive research environment, with major research interests in apoptosis, biomarker development, cancer genetics/genomics, cell cycle, developmental biology, epigenetics/epigenomics, invasion and metastasis, signal transduction, steroid hormone action and therapeutic development.
We are currently seeking a Senior Research Officer to drive new projects into understanding the causes of cancer treatment failure and developing new treatment approaches for pancreatic cancer within the Personalised Cancer Therapeutics laboratory of the Cancer Division. The successful applicant will join an established research team of Dr Marina Pajic, with a track record in research excellence and is expected to be highly motivated and creative. Duties will include day-to-day laboratory leadership, research project management, staff and student supervision, assistance with manuscript and grant writing, and collaboration with colleagues within and outside the Institute. A secondary aim of the research is to generate new funding to support the incumbent’s future salary, on-costs, research assistant costs, and ongoing project costs.
The role will be offered full-time for 2 years in the first instance. The key responsibilities include the following:
Research project leadership
The Principal Investigator (PI) has several funded projects that utilise a combination of unique in vivo models of cancer that her lab has generated, innovative “-omics” approaches, and patient materials and datasets, to examine drug class-specific resistance mechanisms as well as causes of broad multi-drug resistance in pancreatic cancer. The incumbent will work on current studies including validation of new drug targets and developing optimal combination therapies for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The incumbent will be expected to develop exciting new projects under this umbrella of research.
Laboratory development and maintenance
Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) to organise the laboratory including safety, cleanliness, security, maintaining the environment up to standard, and laboratory budget oversight.
Development of collaborative links
The incumbent will communicate, cooperate, and build strong relationships with relevant researchers nationally and internationally
Teach and supervise laboratory staff and students
As requested by the PI, the incumbent will take on the day-to-day supervision of technicians, research assistants, students, clinicians or other research staff working in or with the laboratory.
Assist with preparation of manuscripts, presentations and grants
The incumbent will generate and prepare data in a form suitable for publication or presentation, in a timely manner, and assist the PI in assembling and describing these data for manuscripts and grants.
You will have the following key skills and qualifications:
- Graduated with PhD in an area of science concerned with cell and molecular biology
- A strong first-author track record of scientific publications in quality peer-reviewed journals
- Evidence of ability to attract scholarships/ fellowships
- Experience with animal models of disease
- Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, such as gene cloning and targeting, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, transfection and expression analysis
- Strong experimental, graphics, and statistical skills, and an enthusiasm for writing
- Ability to work without supervision, team-build, collaborate, and supervise junior staff
- Be highly motivated
- Possess an innovative approach to problem solving
- Have a strong commitment to quality
- Have excellent communication skills for written reports and oral presentations
- Demonstrate a capacity to work cooperatively with other Group and Division members
- Be well organised and a good time manager
