The Neurotranscriptomics Laboratory at the Garvan Institute aims to elucidate mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental dysfunction and disease. These findings can improve outcomes for the patients, their families and other individuals with neurological disorders.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a talented and driven Research Officer to join the Neurotranscriptomics Laboratory of Dr Robert Weatheritt.

The Research Officer will develop a project aimed at understanding the function of alternative splicing and other post-transcriptional processes within the nervous system. The role will combine genomics and high-resolution microscopy to explore the impact of alternative proteins on intracellular trafficking. This approach aims to elucidate how post-transcriptional regulation expands the complexity of the proteome in neurons and how its misregulation leads to neurological disorders.

The role will be full-time for 2 years in the first instance and the salary offered is $81,935 pa.

About You

You will have the following key skills and experience:

  • PhD in a related field
  • 2 years of relevant research experience
  • Experience in studying fundamental aspects of RNA biology
  • Molecular biology skills, e.g. PCR, cloning, mutagenesis
  • Experience in fluorescence microscopy and single molecule approaches
  • Proficient in computational biology and have previous experience analysing image data
  • Ability to rapidly learn new skills
  • Experience in drafting and finalising scientific manuscripts
  • Multiple first-author publications in high impact journals
