The Research Assistant is accountable under guidance for conducting experiments within the Cancer Research Division. The Cancer Biology Laboratory employs molecular, genomic and single-cell techniques to understand the normal cell biology of the breast and how this influences the characteristics and progression of breast cancer: https://www.garvan.org.au/research/cancer/cancer-biology.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and talented Research Assistant to join our team full-time for 9 months starting in September 2018, with a view to extension subject to grant funding. Reporting to Professor Chris Ormandy, your key responsibilities will include: 

  • Assist with and perform experiments under guidance rather than constant supervision
  • Assist with interpretation of experimental procedures and results
  • Create and present reports on scientific findings under guidance
  • Responsible for sharing knowledge and research progress with the Research Division
  • Regularly attend meetings with the wider Research Division community to discuss and review current and future technologies and experiments as assigned
  • Assist new members of the Research Division within the laboratory
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant applications and research proposals

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to have the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Science or Medicine (with 1st class honours)
  • Specific technical expertise relating to position or field of study with preferably at least 4 years’ experience within a laboratory
  • Competent computer skills (Excel, Word & PowerPoint)
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Competent report writing and presentation skills
