Clinical Research Fellow - Breast and Prostate Cancer

Job No: GC201884
Location: Darlinghurst, NSW

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 600 scientists, students and support staff.  We pioneer study into the most widespread diseases affecting our community today, including cancer, neurodegenerative and mental diseases, disorders of the immune system, diabetes and obesity, osteoporosis and other skeletal disorders.

Breast and Prostate Cancer Research

Associate Professor Anthony Joshua leads the medical oncology department at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre. He leads a large clinical trial portfolio, with a focus on genitourinary, phase I and melanoma trials. Associate Professor Elgene Lim leads the breast cancer clinical portfolio as well as the Connie Johnson Breast Cancer Research Laboratory, a translational research laboratory at the Garvan Institute.

We perform clinically focused laboratory research in partnership with patients who generously donate their tissues as critical building blocks for our experiments. We evaluate novel therapies in these preclinical breast cancer models, allowing us to understand the mechanisms of action and resistance, and to develop the preclinical rationale to move these treatments into clinical trials in patients. Another major focus of our group is hormone receptors (such as the estrogen and androgen receptors) in breast cancers, and identifying ways to sensitise these cancer cells to endocrine therapies.

The Opportunity

The Clinical Research Fellow is responsible for developing the translational breast cancer research program. The projects will be translational in nature, interfacing between clinical trials, overseeing investigator initiated trials, patient sample acquisition, and clinical follow-up of patients. This position will spend half the time in the Connie Johnson Breast Cancer Laboratory and the remaining half at St Vincent’s Hospital as a Prostate Cancer Fellow. Reporting to Elgene Lim and Anthony Joshua, your key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the running of investigator initiated and sponsored prostate and breast cancer clinical trials
  • Overseeing the patient tissue acquisition program at the Connie Johnson Laboratory, including Project Share and the rapid autopsy program
  • Conducting experiments and other duties in a timely, efficient and diligent manner to assist in the overall project progressing expeditiously
  • Collating and recording experimental data accurately, writing up experimental procedures and contributing to the interpretation of experimental results
  • Participating in regular meetings with the Laboratory Head to discuss current and planned experiments
  • Presenting (on a rostered basis) to all members of the Cancer Division
  • Making recommendations to the Laboratory Head or Director of the Cancer Division on ways of improving techniques, quantitative methods and quality control

This full-time position is offered for a 1-year term in the first instance, and is expected to commence in February 2019.

About You

  • An MBBS/MD qualification
  • High motivation and level of commitment to achieve scientific goals
  • Team player
  • Excellent time management and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to carry out high quality work consistently
