The Garvan Institute is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutions with approximately 500 scientists, students and support staff working in research programs in Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Genome Informatics, Osteoporosis, and Neuroscience.
We are now seeking a highly driven postdoctoral scientist with training or experience in bioinformatics to join the Breast Translational Oncology Program, Headed by Dr Alex Swarbrick and A/Prof. Sandra O’Toole. This program is a multidisciplinary group aiming to translate fundamental discoveries in transcriptomics, cell biology, functional genomics and genomics into advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The incumbent will have two main responsibilities. The first is to train scientists in the use of informatic tools and to assist them in the interrogation of in-house and published ‘omic datasets (eg. TCGA, CCLE, ICGC). The second is to conduct bioinformatics research to discover and validate biomarkers, in collaboration with laboratory scientists and clinicians.
The successful candidate would have the following attributes:
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics or related 
field.
- Familiarity with genome databases and statistical analysis methods.
- Experience with next generation sequencing data analysis would be advantageous.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.
Remuneration for this position is competitive and commensurate on experience with additional salary packaging benefits. The position is based at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, a new joint initiative of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and St. Vincent’s Hospital, located in inner-city Darlinghurst.
