The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Research Assistant to assist in the identification and investigation of novel therapeutic targets in osteosarcoma. This role reports to Prof David Thomas and Dr Maya Kansara. The successful candidate will participate in the set up and monitoring of preclinical mouse models of cancer. This position will involve, tissue and serum analysis, immune cell subset characterisation, and complex flow cytometry. The research assistant will also perform in vitro cell culture, isolate DNA and RNA, carry out RT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and In situ hybridisation in both mouse and human tissues.

Skills and experience required for this role

  • BSc (hons) or masters + at least 3 years laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated competence with mouse models of cancer
  • Skills in cell biology, flow cytometry, protein quantification with ELISA, bead arrays and Western blotting
  • Molecular Biology skills, qRTPCR, RNA/DNA preps,
  • Ability to learn new techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
  • Be capable of carrying out duties without supervision
  • A high attention to details and ability to carry out routinely high quality work
  • Have excellent communication skills

About the Project

The focus of our research is to understand how genetically complex tumours such as osteosarcoma can evade detection and destruction by the immune system. Areas of interest include molecular sculpting of the tumour by the immune system, the role of inflammatory cytokines, immune checkpoint blockade and chemotherapy induced modification of immune response. Utilising preclinical models developed in the laboratory we aim to investigate treatment strategies, which could be translated into the clinic. Our aim is to identify new treatment options that can increase the survival rate and quality of life for people diagnosed with osteosarcoma.
