The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 600 scientists, students and support staff. Our scientists are researchers who work towards making significant breakthroughs in scientific discovery to positively impact human health. 

The Garvan Partnerships Office operates in a multi-disciplinary team environment covering science, legal and commercial/corporate disciplines. It undertakes four core functions for the Institute – researcher support, IP capture and management, commercialisation and industry engagement, and special projects.

About the role

The Contracts & Intellectual Property (IP) Administrator position has four main components:

  • Contracts administration and processing for a wide range of transactions including confidentiality agreements, collaborative research & development agreements and licences
  • Administration of the Garvan Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) system
  • Patent portfolio administration, including determining action required from patent attorney correspondence, and ensuring files are up to date and liaising with the Partnerships Managers and researchers to obtain information to progress patent prosecution
  • Executive support to the Corporate Counsel and the Partnerships Managers

This role is offered on a full time permanent basis.

Skills & Experience required for this role:

  • Well-developed administrative skills with a minimum of three (3) years experience in a similar administrative role
  • Experience in contract processing and data entry
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Computer literacy with experience in Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to deal with internal and external clients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines in a busy environment
  • Previous experience in patent portfolio administration will be highly regarded
