Bioinformatic Research Assistant/Research Officer - Genomic Cancer Medicine

Job No: GC305
Location: Darlinghurst

At Garvan our research is focused upon understanding the role of genes and molecular and cellular processes in health and disease as the basis for developing future preventions, treatments and cures. Our scientists are researchers who work towards making significant breakthroughs in scientific discovery to positively impact human health.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking to appoint a talented bioinformatician to join the Cancer Risk Study within the Genomic Cancer Medicine Program.  This study uses whole-genome sequencing of large case-control cohorts to comprehensively identify genetic variants associated with the risk of developing cancer.  The results of this study will lead to a better understanding of the genetic causes of cancer, and have the potential to improve patient survival by facilitating earlier cancer detection.  Ultimately this work will contribute to the understanding of human genetic variation and its impact on health and disease.

This position will involve:

  • The identification of structural, copy number, mobile element, and other complex forms of variation in thousands of whole-genome human datasets;
  • The curation and use of variant effect databases and predictive software to annotate millions of genetic variants with their known and predicted effects on biological function, with a particular focus on non-coding variation and cancer; and
  • The application and interpretation of rare variant aggregated genetic association tests in a cancer risk case-control context.

Skills and Experience

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Molecular Biology, or related field; or BSc (Hons) with extensive relevant post-degree experience,
  • Highly developed skills in bioinformatics and genomics.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems and command-line tools essential
  • Prior experience with NGS genotyping data essential
  • Experience in the analysis of human complex and non-coding variation
  • Experience in quantitative genetics, particularly rare variant association testing
  • Familiarity with HPC queuing systems (eg. PBS, SGE)
  • Knowledge of cancer biology
  • Delegation of authority and responsibility
  • Ability to develop, manage, and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong project management skills
