The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Research officer to join the Insulin Signalling Group. The key research goals of this group include: defining the interactions between protein kinase C, lipid metabolism and insulin action, identifying enzymes and intermediates of sphingolipid metabolism which affect insulin sensitivity and examining the effectiveness of targeting key molecules for the treatment of diabetes, using new and existing drugs.

Skills & Experience required for this role

  • Experience with advanced molecular and biochemical techniques such as qPCR and proteomics
  • Experience with cell culture and animal models
  • High levels of motivation
  • A strong commitment to quality
  • Excellent communication skills for written reports and oral presentations
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Sound administrative abilities

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducting experiments and other duties in a timely, efficient and diligent manner to assist in the overall project progressing expeditiously
  • Adopting published methods and interacting with scientists within and outside the Garvan
  • Evaluating and applying alternative methodologies to optimise sensitivity and reproducibility
  • Developing and applying methodologies, as the need arises
  • Collating experimental data, writing up experimental procedures and contributing to the interpretation of experimental results
  • Participating in joint weekly meetings of the Beta Cell Signalling, Beta Cell Biology and Insulin Signalling Groups to discuss current and planned experiments
  • Presenting (on a rostered basis) to all members of Garvan
