The Cancer Research Division is an integrated team of strongly interactive research groups undertaking research aimed at increasing the international knowledge base on the development, progression, treatment and prevention of human cancers. Divisional research is underpinned by extensive tissue banks, collected through local, national and international collaborations, as well as by databases that document relevant clinical and pathological information.

The Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre – New South Wales

The Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre (APCRC-NSW) is a collaboration between the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and the St Vincent’s Prostate Cancer Centre. The APCRC-NSW incorporates a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, pathologists, nurses and support staff.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Research Assistant/Clinical Research Coordinator to support the daily operations of the APCRC-NSW as well as assist with the management of clinical research projects. The incumbent will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting edge bench to bedside medical research, network with a diverse group of researchers at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and be given the opportunity to contribute their original work for potential publication in esteemed academic journals. Research Assistants who have relevant experience and are looking for a career change but still want to stay close to the science are encouraged to apply!

Reporting to Anne-Maree Haynes – Biobank/Data Manager, the key responsibilities include:

  • The collection of clinical data and biospecimen materials relating to the biobank
  • Independently managing data for multiple clinical studies
  • Maintaining, auditing and implementing changes to these electronic databases
  • Data collection and assistance with specific research projects
  • Assistance with Ethics Submissions and writing Annual Reports
  • Contributing to the writing and development of Standard Operating Procedures and Electronic Case Report Forms.

The role will be offered full-time for 1 year in the first instance.

About You

You will possess the following key skills and qualifications:

Essential Skills

  • A degree in science, applied science or a health-related discipline
  • Previous experience working in a clinical setting is critical
  • Excellent proficiency using Microsoft Office Suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines

Desirable Skills

  • Previous experience working with biological samples would be highly desired
  • Basic understanding of the ethics submission process
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills
  • Excellent data entry skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • A working knowledge of clinical research
