The Opportunity

The Casual Service Assistant is responsible for the general maintenance and operation of the Garvan Molecular Genetics (GMG) facility services, including cleaning of work areas and setting up mastermixes, helping with DNA and RNA extraction, helping in processing repetitive sample preparation or analysis steps. In addition, this role is responsible for the temporary replacement of staff from all services of GMG when needed. GMG services are operating in a quality controlled environment with NATA ISO 17025 and ISO 15189 certifications. The position of the Service Assistant is required to work within the quality system set up for GMG, specifically: work according to the Standard Operation Protocols established and participate actively in maintaining and improving the quality of the services.

About You

You will have the following key skills and attributes:

  • An Honours degree in Science with majors in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or related disciplines, or working for a similar service provider for at least 3 years
  • Theoretical understanding of PCR, capillary sequencing and genotyping
  • Theoretical understanding of Quantitative RT-PCR and HRM analysis
  • Theoretical understanding of Primer design, PCR assay design, sequence data analysis
  • Theoretical understanding of DNA and RNA extraction, PCR setup and Post-PCR analysis methods
  • Theoretical understanding of Microsatellite analysis
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Excellent organisational, verbal and written communication in regard to project planning, result and report communication, and complaint and resolution communication
