The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Technical Specialist – Cell Sorting to join our dedicated Facilities team. The Garvan Flow Cytometry Facility is a core service that provides world class cell sorting and analysis services to the Garvan Institute as well as the wider research precinct.

The role of the Technical Specialist – Cell Sorting is to carry out routine operations of the flow cytometers and daily maintenance tasks. The key responsibilities include:

  • Operation of fluorescent activated cell sorters
  • Start-up procedures and some maintenance of the flow cytometry equipment
  • Perform quality control for the instruments in adherence to strict operating procedures
  • Maintain laboratory stock levels and make up basic reagents
  • Communicate complex ideas and information to lab users
  • Daily maintenance of laboratory records and data management

This role is offered on a full-time basis for 9 months.

About You

You will have experience with flow based cell sorting and a good understanding of biological research. The successful candidate will also be a self-motivated, logic driven individual with the ability to prioritise delegated tasks and the capacity to perform some self-guided investigations in a scientifically rigorous manner.

This is a customer-facing role and you will be dealing with researchers from various backgrounds. Excellent computer and technical skills will be highly regarded.
