About the Project
The Immunology Division has established an Immunogenomics laboratory to apply massively parallel sequencing and genomics technologies to understanding the pathogenesis of immune system diseases including autoimmunity, immune deficiency, and cancer of immune cells. In collaboration with The Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics, other laboratories in the Garvan Institute, and a network of clinical, laboratory and computation collaborators, the laboratory provides access to contemporary techniques for detecting and evaluating mutations revealed by whole genome sequencing, deep RNA sequencing, or single cell sequencing. This technology will be applicable to the study of both human tissue and animal models of disease.
The Opportunity
We currently have a new opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the Immunogenomics laboratory supporting Dr Joanne Reed to analyse mouse models of autoimmunity and gene expression profiles and high parameter flow cytometric patterns of human lymphocytes.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Working with experimental mouse models of autoimmunity, including handling, injections and tissue dissection
- Maintain and monitor mouse colonies
- Perform high parameter flow cytometric cell sorting and analysis of precious lymphocyte subpopulations from humans and mice
- Design vectors to express mutant and wild-type versions of genes and antibodies in human or mouse cells, for example by transient or stable transfection or retroviral transduction
- Measure the activity of expressed genes or antibodies by methods such as qPCR, ELISA, luciferase assays, western blotting, flow cytometry or confocal microscopy
This full-time position is offered on a 1-year fixed term in the first instance.
About You
You will possess the following key skills and experience:
- BSc Hons with majors in Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, Immunology or equivalent
- Desire to pursue a PhD in Immunology
- Expertise in flow cytometry methods, expression or analysis of antibodies, PCR, or transfection of cells would be an advantage
- Expertise in animal handling an advantage
- Experience of managing own research project
- Effective communication skills, able to take active part in group discussions and strategy meetings with senior members of the research team
- Presentation skills at scientific meetings or oral presentations to the research group
- Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities
- Research, plan and execute experiments and analyse and interpret data generated
