The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Research officer to join the Mitochondrial Metabolism and Ageing Group under the direct supervision of Dr Andrew Philp. This project seeks to examine the efficacy of the small natural ingredient, Ursolic acid, for therapeutic use in humans. The post holder will lead the clinical metabolic physiology group within the Philp lab and be responsible for liaising with clinical teams during human research trials. Further they will be required to develop and manage human exercise testing facilities in the clinical research facility at Garvan. The bench to bedside component of the project will involve sample procurement and processing dissected tissues for further cell bioenergetics, genomic, proteomic and histologic analysis of them. The Research officer will also participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, and provide support collaborative projects involving other scientists. 

Skills & Experience Required for this Role 

  • Experience in conducting human pre-clinical nutritional and exercise studies is a direct requirement of the project.
  • Experience in recruiting human volunteers for large cohort pre-clinical intervention studies.
  • Experience in working in both academic and industrial environments.
  • Proven track record of in vivo metabolic phenotyping in humans.
  • Experience drafting and finalising scientific manuscripts.
  • Experience with conducting basic laboratory analyses such as Western blotting, RT-PCR and protein and hormone analyses by ELISA.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducting experiments and other duties in a timely, efficient and diligent manner to assist in the overall project progressing expeditiously.
  • Evaluating and applying alternative methodologies to optimise sensitivity and reproducibility.
  • Collating experimental data, writing up experimental procedures and contributing to the interpretation of experimental results for academic and industrial partners.
  • Participating in joint weekly meetings of the Cellular and Molecular Metabolism research group and presenting (on a rostered basis) to all members of Garvan.

Salary offered:  $81,935 pa plus 14% superannuation.
