About the Garvan Research Foundation

Garvan Research Foundation is the marketing and fundraising arm of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was established in 1981 to provide support to the Institute’s medical research programs. Garvan Research Foundation’s income has grown from a fundraising base of $110,000 to over $30 million in 2016. The remarkable success of the Foundation’s awareness campaigns and fundraising activities allows Garvan’s scientists to continue contributing to knowledge which will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better disease management, new therapies and prevention or cure of a range of diseases. The marketing team of the Foundation serves as brand ambassador for the Institute and the focal point in writing and editing a wide range of scientific, educational and promotional and marketing content, as well as thought leadership, that supports the Foundation’s overall supporter growth and brand strategies. 

 

The purpose of the role

This is an opportunity to join our innovative and high-performing team as a digital content specialist. Demonstrating your passion for digital content, you will work closely with the Senior Digital Marketing Officer and the Digital Marketing Coordinator in amplifying Garvan’s data insights by writing content for landing pages, web and social media pieces that highlight and promote the work we do.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and editing interactive content, video scripts, e-mails and a variety of additional multi-channel communications that are engaging, actionable and support channel-specific integrated marketing plans.
  • Working with subject matter experts for thought leadership content, demonstrating an ability to effectively edit and enhance their writing, while also maintaining their unique voice.
  • Writing and editing e-mail content sent to key audiences as part of both monthly e-newsletters and targeted marketing campaigns.
  • Development of content for the Institute’s social media presence – primarily Facebook advertising and Google AdWords.
  • Informing and implementing the Institute’s Search Engine Optimization and keyword research strategies for content on digital and social media properties.
  • Digesting analysis of audience engagement statistics and data to creatively identify ways to continuously enhance reader involvement with content.

 

Experience and considerations for the role

  • Min of 4 years’ experience writing for the web and/or social
  • A highly collaborative approach with an ability to work at all levels of our organisation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Degree qualified and/or equivalent experience in digital, journalism, marketing, communications or related discipline.
  • Extensive knowledge of all new media channels and the best practices associated with these channels (e.g., keyword research, search engine optimisation).
  • Good or thorough knowledge of Google Analytics to identify and exploit user trends and content interactions
  • Creativity and passion for writing and new media are a must.
  • Demonstrated experience in content management systems.
  • Experience in non- profits would be advantageous (not essential).
  • Be a polished, articulate and contributing representative of the digital and Foundation team in discussions with lab heads, marketing colleagues and senior management.
